Finn Delmar is the prince of Porlan. He's the eldest son of the royal family, and as the eldest of the siblings, he's expected to become the future king and heir to the throne.

However, he's quite anxious about this and feels very unprepared, usually just sneaking out to either hang out with locals or stay by his lonesome.

His family disapproves of this, and often attempts to shelter him from the world so he does not embarrass them or get himself into trouble. But most of their attempts turn out to be unsuccessful.

Appearance

Chibi finley

Finn is a Blue Dragon Sea Slug merman, he roughly 2 meters tall from head to tail. His skin is light blue, with dark blue markings on his back and arms, white the front of his body is white.

He has short dark royal blue hair, pale gold coloured eyes and wears a small pearl gold crown. His skin and body appears to have a smoother texture compared to those of the average Drimare, and he has three pairs of cerata fins on his tail, as well as on his shoulders and elbows

Finn wears a pearl gold armor-like chest piece, golden bracelets on his forearms, as well as gold pieces of chin, antenna and hip fins.

This armor is also decorated with pearls as well as a carved with texture similar to that of fish scales, the large pearls particularly being a symbol of his royalty status.

Personality

Despite his royal background, Finn is actually a very humble and gentle soul. Most could even consider him to be a pushover and his shyness often gives him some trouble with standing up for himself, but he has strong beliefs and a great desire to do good.

However, the idea of being the heir to the throne and the future king in charge is something that makes him extremely anxious and he often feels like he's just not cut out for job, specially with the trouble he has with being assertive, as well as his clumsiness, and his tendency to be a people-pleaser.

Despite this, his kindness and unintentional effortless charm, makes him quite liked by the locals he meets, even finding himself swooning potential suitors with his singing.

However, he's also a bit of airhead, so he hardly takes any notice to this, often being distracted with daydreaming about the world outside the kingdom.

Because of his tendency to be so kind and casual with locals, his family tends to fear for his safety as well as their reputation, as such, they usually end up trying to sheltering and keeping him from going outside much like he was as child, which frustrates him immensely and only fuels his desire for freedom.

Finn is also very enthusiastic about adventure and pirate stories, although the pirates of Keelhaul Isle are technically rivals to the kingdom he's meant to rule in the future, he can't help but to feel drawn to their lifestyle.

Rhe idea of being a free spirited sailor and going on adventures being all too appealing to him, and he often fantasizes about running off and joining a crew, despite the fact that this would mean betraying his family and his people.

Although he doesn't usually act on these impulses, he still can't help but to daydream about it.

Relationships

Parents

Typical royalty story trope where the parents have high expectations for their child. Might get replaced if I come up with something that's more interesting

Finn isn't too emotionally close with either of them as he finds it hard to relate to their ideas of what a ruler should be.

His parents put a lot of pressure on him and he often feels exasperated like he's unable to have any conversation with them

update - His parents are so distant that they make Finn refer to them with terms like "sir" or "your majesty" and junk like that

Finn also rarely to never gets addressed to by his name, but rather as "the prince" etc

Sibling(s)

Being the eldest, Finn has adopted a fatherly attitude towards his younger siblings and cares a lot for them. I dunno, I haven't developed them at all, I just know he has them.

Uberon

Although never having met him, the infamous zombie pirate has reached a status of legend, in the worst way possible.

Although most of Porlan is underwater, and they can easily fend off the isle's smaller pirates with ease, the idea of Uberon and his crew potentially attacking is one that leaves Finn quite distressed.

Russell

I feel like they've met

No idea but I don't think they'd get along

He's too crude

They'd bond over having indecipherable scotish accents

Jasper

What if... sea shanty enthusiasts...

Backstory

Ever since he was very young, Finn was always taught to strike for no less than perfection. His parents were king and queen of Porlan, and with him being the prince, hopes were high, and a lot of greatness was expected from him.

Finn was meant to continue on with his family's legacy, to become a stern ruler, someone who was an assertive, cautious and attentive leader. An image of refined perfection much like the king and queen were, an expectation he couldn't reach.

His parents had always been distant, only ever speaking to him to teach him about the importance of his future duties, and to express their displeasure with his poor performance during their teachings.

Finn could hardly ever get his parents to talk to him, ensuring his future success was all that was important to them, and with having been practically raised by the workers in the palace, the lonely prince spent most of his life in solitude.

He had long been raised to accept that this was his destiny, and as much as he tried his best to be the ideal perfect child, Finn often struggled with keeping up. He was clumsy and often easily distracted, struggling to focus on the teachings he was being given.

And as much as he wanted for his parents to be proud of him, even if just once, he knew this wouldn't happen, and his motivation decreased the older he became as he grew to resent being born with royal blood.

To prevent him from harm and distractions, Finn had lived his entire life forbidden from ever leaving the palace, and never once did he attempt to disobey these orders. With the countless stories of how he'd be an easy target and be abducted into the Great Depths, or how he'd get captured by pirates and held ransom, often fueling his vivid imagination.

The fish of the Great Depths were intimidating, but the pirates of the surface became fascinating to him. Finn knew the Keelhaul Islanders were enemies of the kingdom, but yet, he still grew captivated by the idea of them. Fascinated with the idea of the surface, Finn would often spend his time in the palace's library to attempt to learn as much as he could about the surface, and particularly the pirate island he had grown so fond of.

Pleased with the prince's newly found interest in his studies, the king and queen decided to reward him by allowing for him to accompany them into one of Porlan's festivals to celebrate their holidays, particularly the countless victories they had over the islanders.

After having been closed off throughout his entire life, the idea of finally being able to witness the festivals he had countless times begged to attend with his parents was extremely exciting so much so that it quickly became overwhelming once he was finally there.

All the music, lights and groups made him feel extremely anxious, his fear of the kidnappers he had been warned about was taking over, although he was just a young teen by then, he still felt exposed and vulnerable in front of all those people. His people. The ones he was meant to rule over in the future. All these thoughts were flooding his mind and he wanted to leave, he needed to leave as soon as possible.

In a panic, without any warning, fight or flight kicked in and he swam away as fast he could, away from his parents and royal guard and everyone else, he swam as fast as he could, finding himself away from the festival and into the town.

His lack of familiarity with the Porlan streets quickly got him lost, and with everyone busy celebrating the festival, the rest of the streets were completely empty and this only made him more anxious than ever.

This was the perfect place to get kidnapped and attacked, he thought as he felt frozen by fear, Finn cornered himself into a hidden spot near the wall, the overgrown kelp being the perfect spot for the small prince to hide in.

Soon he managed to calm down from his anxiety attack, but once the realization sank that his parents would never let him leave the palace ever again after this stunt, he grew scared once again, dreading that his parents would yell at him after all of this, and he just cried, only stopping himself once the royal guards began roaming the streets in search of the lost prince.

The kelp could only keep him hidden for long, and hours later, he was soon found by one of the guards, being promptly returned to his parents. And of course. His permanent grounding wasn't going to be changing anytime soon. Not after having been such an embarrassment to royal family and pulling such a stunt like that with disappearing for hours without a word.

With his entire life having basically been spent grounded, Finn was once again restricted back into the palace, this time just grounded in his room, and frustrated, he complied. But as he sat in the large lonely room, the tall clean walls, the safety, it was... infuriating.

Despite his anxiety induced stunt earlier, causing him to hate his experience of going out in public for the first time, Finn couldn't help but to think about it. The adrenaline was like nothing like he had ever experienced before, and as he looked down on the kingdom from his window, he couldn't help but to crave that feeling again.

He recalled the texture of the kelp on his skin, the empty streets, the way that compared to the smooth sculpted pearl gold palace, the ground outside was rough, a mix of colourful sand and rock. It wasn't the most comfortable, but it was... different...

Maybe one day he'd get to experience it once more. Maybe it was about time he stopped being afraid of the outside world.

Trivia

  • The name "Finn" is a reference to the fins of fish, while his last name "Delmar" means "Of the Sea"
  • His clumsiness often causes him to be constantly knocking things over with his tail, which leaves him quite distressed with himself.
  • Finn was a character who first appeared in a dream I had. He was very polite and seemed to have been caught in some fishing lines filed with pearls, which can be seen in his initial concept art.
    • Basically, when I woke up I was like "Uh. Who was that? He looked nice." so I drew him.
      • He was actually nameless for a long while before I settled for "Finn", and the idea of making him a prince was only considered much later on.
