Insect Drimare, also referred to as Insects, Insectoids or Bugs are a common subspecies of Animal Drimare living all around the Drimare Universe.
They're based on common insects and take after their various features. They're quite common in forest-like areas such as Amaranth and the Rem Forest, but are also oddly common on Soarite.
In Droptera they're the predominant species along with Bird Drimare, who they have a very negative history with.
They're hardworking and tend to enjoy functioning in large hivemind-like groups.
They also have a love/hate relationship with Flower Drimare, being naturally drawn to each other and sometimes even forming odd almost symbiotic-like relationships with one another.
Appearance[]
Insect Drimare are usually easily recognizable by their antennae, wings and exoskeleton limbs, as well as their uncommon eye colours.
Skin[]
While the skin tones vary depending on the Insect species, tinted blacks and greys are the most common skin tones.
Tinted whites and browns can also be seen in certain species.
Flies and dragonflies tend to almost always have black skin, and bees usually have grey or brown skin tones.
Antennae[]
While not all insect species have them, the antennae are quite common and an easy way to distinguish an insect Drimare.
The antennae usually grow on top of their head and the shape varies depending on the species. And they are capable of moving them on their own.
They're usually solid coloured, though moths are known to grow coloured fur on theirs, usually matching the colour of their hair.
Eyes[]
Insects are oddballs when it comes to how their eyes look, usually falling into three different categories.
Compound
The most common type of insect eye, these eyes are fully coloured, however, unlike the eyes of their real-life counterparts, they do still have a regular pupil. The pupil is most commonly round, but slit and hexagonal pupils can appear in some cases.
Black Scleras
The second most common type of insect eye, they look like the eyes of the Regular Drimare, but rather than having white scleras, they're black instead. The iris colour also varies with the species.
Coloured Scleras
A rare type of insect eye. Similar to above, except the scleras are colourful rather than just solid black. It's very unlikely for an Insect Drimare to have white scleras.
Teeth[]
Sharp fangs are very common among most species. Butterflies seem to be cursed with having shark teeth for some reason, or maybe it's just Tyler's family that is weird like that.
Ears[]
Variable with species, Insect Drimare are also one of the few subspecies of Animal Drimare that keep the regular elf-like ears.
Butterflies and Moths have normal long ears that have furred tips.
Unlike Regular Drimare, some Insects can also have small shorter ears, particularly the Beetle subspecies.
Limbs[]
Common to most Animal Drimare, the forearms and forelegs tend to keep the animal's features. In the Insect Drimare's case, these are replaced with hard exoskeletons, with the exception of Moths, who grow fur instead.
Some Insects will grow either fur tufts or spikes on their elbows and back of their legs, and most insects only have two to three toes and a single dewclaw, usually appearing to walk on their tiptoes.
Hair[]
They have regular hair, and some species have chest fur, this fur can either match the colour of the hair or some other accent colour. Ombres are extremely common.
Build[]
While it varies depending on the individuals, stereotypically speaking, butterflies tend to be tall and slim and moths and beetles are short and chubby.
Wings[]
Most Insect Drimare have them and can naturally use them to take flight. They usually aren't too different from their real-life counterparts, though the wings are significantly more robust as well.
Tails[]
They can be quite rare, but some species still have them, particularly the dragon and damselflies for examples.
Clothing[]
While the clothing varies on region and individual preference, Insect Drimare often need special types of clothes to better accommodate their extra body parts. Particularly clothes that can fit in their wings and sometimes tails.
Like most Animal Drimare, Insects don't commonly wear shoes, and due to being a mostly flying species, they can start feeling cramped if wearing too many heavy clothing pieces.
Spider Drimare particularly need clothing that accommodates for their extra limbs.
Life Cycle[]
Most Insects are born with what is referred to as a "Larva" form, usually being born wingless they tend to have a very large appetite. Unlike their real-life counterparts, the Larva phase of the Insect Drimare lasts throughout all of their childhoods.
They lack the hard exoskeleton parts of their bodies and are really squishy, bruising easily and growing a lot of fur in order to protect their fragile bodies.
Most Insects pupate around the time they reach puberty, where they get into metamorphosis for a period that can last from 1-3 months. During this period, they usually stay home, almost as if hibernating throughout the process, and they only leave once the transformation is done.
There's a short adjustment period, where the parents will then teach the newly pupated child to use their wings, though most of them can already figure it out on their own. Gaining their wings is usually seen as a right of passage and most are considered adults once they get them.
Insect Drimare have slightly shorter live-spans than those of Regular Drimare, only living up to the ages of 60-70 years varying with species.
Origins & Habitat[]
Much like the most common Drimare species, it's hard to track down the origin of Insect Drimare. There are rumours that the first insects originated from the region of Droptera, as to this day, that region is still primarily inhabited by them.
Most Insects tend to enjoy living in groups and hivemind like communities. They can usually also be found mixed with the Flower and other subspecies of Plant Drimare. Despite being Animal Drimare, they rarely associate with other Animals who aren't insects.
Fun Facts[]
- The first version of the Insect Drimare species had a particular trait of them having floating limbs, like this.
